WKAR-AM Offers New Programs in July

WKAR/AM 870 will be making several exciting program changes effective July 2009!

Over the past several years, we’ve heard from many listeners of our AM program service who have longed for the return of two previously aired NPR programs and have requested we consider several other offerings.

We’re pleased to announce that NPR’s weekday live news/talk/call-in program, Talk of the Nation (TOTN) will return to AM 870 on Wednesday, July 1 at 2 p.m., with veteran journalists Neal Conan (Monday-Thursday) and Ira Flatow (hosting “Science Friday”). And, the network’s sports program Only a Game, with Bill Littlefield, will be aired Saturdays, also at 2 p.m. beginning July 4.

Fans of  Fresh Air and the station’s popular SportsTalk 870 Listener Call-In program, with Earle Robinson, should tune in one hour earlier weekdays, at Noon and 1 p.m., respectively.

Other programs of interest will include AARP’s Prime Time Radio, Hearing Voices, and A World of Possibilities.

Prime Time Radio is a one hour weekly interview program, hosted by Mike Cuthbert, focusing on the wide-ranging interests and concerns of Americans age 40 and older, from health issues to entertainment. (Saturdays, 4 p.m.)

Hearing Voices will present each week contemporary and classic storytelling by established and emerging public radio producers that are crafted together under a thematic umbrella. (Sundays, 2 p.m.)

Rounding out WKAR-AM’s new line-up will be A World of Possibilities. The internationally syndicated program, hosted by Mark Sommer, seeks to build bridges across boundaries of background and belief and to discover solutions to longstanding challenges through conversations with pragmatic social innovators. (Sundays, 4 p.m.)

Talk of the Nation links the headlines of what's on people's minds, providing a springboard for listeners and experts to exchange ideas and pose critical questions about major events in the news and the world around them.

Monday through Thursday, host Neal Conan invites callers to discuss areas of topical interest, including politics and public service, education, religion, music and healthcare. On Fridays, journalist Ira Flatow hosts the program and explores science-related topics -- from subatomic particles and the human genome to the Internet and earthquakes.

"The program is a new show, but it is also a national conversation. Each day our goal is to create a show where both of these elements combine," says Conan. The show will live up to its name by bringing to the air the issues, events, concerns and fascinations of Americans."

The addition of these programs also means that several programs will be leaving WKAR-AM’s schedule at the end of June, including: Here and Now, The World, This American Life (TAL), Living on Earth, and the BBC Newshour. However, BBC fans will still be able to enjoy a British perspective on news via the station’s overnight stream of the BBC World Service at the conclusion of WKAR-AM’s regular sunrise-to-sunset broadcast day on WKAR.org.

And, podcasts of TAL, A Prairie Home Companion’s “News from Lake Wobegon” and several other NPR offerings including Car Talk will also be available at WKAR.org.
