WKAR-TV Named Public Television Station of the Year by Michigan Association of Broadcasters. WKAR-TV was honored as Michigan Public Television Station of the Year (budgets of $6 million or less) by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters in their annual Broadcast Excellence Award ceremony held March 14, 2006, in Lansing, Michigan. In addition to receiving Station of the Year, WKAR-TV also received seven awards for locally-produced productions. WKAR Radio also received an award in the radio category. Station of the Year reflects the work the entire WKAR-TV staff has done throughout 2005, including production and community service. The award is based on a point-system for each award received in various categories, as well as a station narrative that highlights activities in which the station may be involved, such as WKAR's Ready To Learn Service, that may not be included in award categories. In addition to Station of the Year, WKAR-TV received the following awards: Best Hard News & Current Events Story: "Michigan At Risk: The Granholm Report Card" Merit Hard News & Current Events Story: " Michigan At Risk: Charter Schools: Here To Stay?" Best Mini-Documentary or Series: "Michigan At Risk: Charter Schools: Here To Stay?" Best Feature/Use of Medium: "Sparty!" Best Cultural & Performing Arts: "QuizBusters" Best News or Public Affairs Special: "Michigan At Risk: The Granholm Report Card" Best Community Involvement: "Auction" WKAR Radio received the Radio award for Best Mini-Documentary/Series for "Competing for Kids: Schools of Choice."
