East Lansing Children's Film Festival

Community Film and Cultural Activity Celebrates Its 10th Year

WKAR is joining the East Lansing Children's Film Festival as a community partner. The annual event is celebrating its tenth year during the festival, which runs February 23-March 1, 2007.

WKAR's Susi Elkins, producer of QuizBusters and webmaster Bill Richards will host a special tour of the WKAR studios for festival attendees. Pre-registration is required (information follows). WKAR staff will also host three festival sessions.

Matt Ottinger (host of WKAR-TV's QuizBusters series) will emcee the Opening Night festivities on Friday, February 23.

WKAR producer/director Joe Barnhart will host the opening night of TeenREEL at NCG Cinemas on Saturday, February 24, at 6:30 p.m.

WKAR Executive Producer Tim Zeko will host the Youth Film Competition Winner Screening on Sunday, February 25, at 2:45 p.m. Zeko is also a judge of the film competition.


The Festival

Films shown during the festival exhibit various filmmaking techniques such as: stop-motion, claymation, scratch and finger paint animation, as well as computer-generated imaging. Genres include live action, documentary, shorts and feature length films.

In addition to year-round workshops and programs, the annual, week-long festival features:
  • 100+ short and feature films from 19 different countries
  • Winners of ELCFF's Youth Film Competition - a statewide competition engaging Michigan's youth to conceptualize, create and exhibit their talents through film.
  • Acting, animation and filmmaking workshops offering interactive educational opportunities
  • NEW! TeenReel - feature films and short programs designed strictly for film buffs, ages 13 and up. These art-house quality films have more intense scenes and content. Parental parental discretion is strongly advised.
  • The Junior Film Critics Club - a year-round student (1-7 grades) film analysis program designed to build critical thinking skills through the medium of film.
The festival is attended by international and domestic filmmakers, producers, directors and actors attend the ELCFF, as well as film fans from throughout the state. About the Young Director's Workshops Young Director's Workshops take Michigan youth's interest in film to the next level.  Award-winning film professionals offer one-day seminars in various aspects of filmmaking including: film production, direction, editing and sound.  Often children leave these sessions with an appreciation for the richness and scope of film, along with a tangible artifact of their activities - films they can view and share with their community.

Bring the whole family and get a behind the scenes tour of WKAR Production Studios. Discover how such favorite characters as Arthur, Maya and Miguel, Caillou, Curious George and the locally-produced game show QuizBusters make it into your living room with producers Susi Elkins and Bill Richards.
