Good Health is for EveryBody! is a three-year outreach initiative focusing
on nutrition, exercise and health education. Primary focus is given to the health
needs and concerns of residents of mid-Michigan and to the people living and working
in the local communities served by WKAR. The target audience is children
ages 2-8 years (pre-K to 3rd grade), parents and families.
Why
* Michigan ranks the third worst in the United States for the rate of obesity
and has been among the ten “heaviest” states since 1992.
* Poor nutrition and dental health habits put many Michigan youth at risk for dental
decay and other related health problems.
*The federal government has mandated that all Michigan school districts develop
a school wellness policy to promote healthy lifestyles, eating and physical activity
for their students – a financial and curriculum challenge for our schools.
The concept of “good health” is a varied as the individuals who seek
it. For some, “good health” is preparing for a triathlon, and for others
it’s giving into fast-food only twice a week as opposed to five days. Wherever
you place yourself and your family on the fitness scale, it’s important to
remember that “good health is for everybody.”
The Project
WKAR has embarked upon a three-year health awareness campaign entitled Good Health
is for EveryBody! This project will provide the communities that we serve with
a better understanding of what “good health” means, while offering
practical ways to incorporate good health principles as part of an everyday lifestyle.
Our goals are to empower children–and their families—to make wise
choices contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Good Health
is for EveryBody! commences in Spring 2007 and runs through Spring 2010.
By strategically targeting and promoting our children’s health programming,
becoming a portal for new and existing health based content in conjunction
with local agencies, and by being a catalyst for the community to interact
in an ongoing
conversation related to these matters, WKAR will play a pivotal role in raising
awareness and effecting change in the health habits of our communities.
