More About Dan Bayer

WKAR Profile: Dan Bayer - The Voice of WKAR
January 2005

You know the voice. But do you know the name? Can you put a face to the name? You may have been lucky to catch a glimpse of him dressed to the nines, in a tuxedo no less, during an annual mid-Michigan spring ritual known as the WKAR-TV Auction, or during one of the station’s on-air membership campaigns.

He’s been part of WKAR for the past 24 years, lending his considerable talents and voice to both radio and television.

Dan Bayer is literally the station’s vocal Jack-of-all-trades. “When I joined the station in 1981, I was a producer/host of WKAR-AM’s Jazz 870, a daily afternoon program,” says Bayer. “I thoroughly enjoy the genre and that I was able to interview several local and national jazz artists for inclusion in the program.”

Bayer’s easy going on-air presence is a perfect fit for WKAR’s varied program offerings, including News/Talk 870 listener call-ins, 90.5’s Music for a New Age, and hosting classical music offerings.

Currently, Bayer can be heard lending his announcing talents to both stations’ promotional/programming spots and the WKAR-TV series QuizBusters, as well as being the calm voice among the frenzied ones during Auction. Whatever the task or challenge of the past 24 years – he has mastered each one exceptionally well.

Prior to joining the stations, Bayer had stints at several commercial (!) radio stations including WJML/Petoskey and Lansing-area rock ‘n roll mainstays, WVIC and WILS.

Bayer, used to the ratings driven, rotating seats that commercial station disc jockeys face each sweeps period (public radio has hosts…), frankly admitted that he never thought that he’d attain “tenure” at any one station. “I’ve had a varied career at WKAR, and the ever-changing programming tastes of our listeners, not to mention my duties at television, have kept my job interesting,” explains Bayer. “And, of course, my love of music which is why I’m still in the business.”

Bayer is also a movie buff who paused when asked to name his favorite film, though he did mention that he enjoys films by Stanley Kubrick, Charlie Chaplin, Ron Howard, and Martin Scorsese. “I really enjoyed The Blues series that Scorsese produced for PBS and that aired on WKAR-TV in the fall of 2003. It was fantastic!”
