Doug Collar
Producer and Host of Jazz 'til Midnight

"Jazz 'till Midnight," Doug Collar's eclectic mix of vintage classics and new releases, is heard Saturdays from 8 until midnight on 90.5 FM.

WKAR Profile: Doug Collar

Doug Collar is a lifelong jazz fan who began collecting vintage recordings at the age of 12. Among the highlights of his "junking career" is pulling out a mint 78 rpm copy of Bird and Diz's "Salt Peanuts" from a thrift store in the early 1960's and unearthing an original Bix Beiderbeck pressing at a Mason flea market.

His favorite jazz memories include dancing to Louis Armstrong's All Stars at Cedar Point Ballroom in 1966, talking to drummer Alan Dawson at intermission while Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan tuned up backstage at a Dave Brubeck concert in 1969, reminiscing with Woody Herman on a snowy evening at a Lansing club in 1970, and interviewing Dizzy Gillespie at Erickson Kiva in 1981. He was in attendance at the ill-fated Newport Jazz Festival of 1971 digging Willie the Lion Smith, Ornette Coleman, and Charles Mingus on a sunny afternoon before the rioters ran amuck during the Brubeck Quartet's evening performance.

Doug began his broadcast career at WKAR in 1979 producing the long running "Jazz Archives" program on AM 870. In the fall of 1980, Doug became the host of "Friday Night Jazz". In 1981 he teamed up with legendary sound engineer and archivist G. Robert Vincent for the 26 part "Musical By-Lines" series uplinked to public radio stations around the country. In 1982, Doug was the host of "Live From the Village Market," a cable TV-FM simulcast with the Patti Richards Trio.

A lifelong Spartan, Doug received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D from MSU. He is currently on the English faculty at Heidelberg College.
